Living with disability hasn’t stopped Aaron working towards his dream job
Aaron approached his local APM office in December 2019 for assistance to find employment. He lives in Taylors Lakes, located a short drive west of Melbourne Airport.
Diagnosed with autism and lower limb deficiencies, Aaron faces multiple challenges in his daily life as well as finding employment.
However, it wouldn’t take him long to make a good impression - after less than two days into a job trial he was offered employment!
Aaron has worked with determination to progress closer to his dream job in the Animal Services Industry.
He’s completed a Certificate IV in Companion Animal Services, but he realised he had to fill a skill gap before he could make it happen.
Customer Service is an integral, transferrable skill in numerous lines of work. Many get this experience within the retail industry, and Aaron knew that was what he had to do.
“I knew I had to get experience to get the job I wanted” he said “April really helped me set some goals.”
His APM Employment Consultant April set about finding the right workplace for him. She worked closely with Aaron, focused on a long-term goal of gaining his dream job and a short-term goal of getting some experience in the retail sector.
“Working with Aaron was great experience” April said “I feel proud we’re getting the right experience for him, and helping him work on his long-term goals.”
April organised a job trial for Aaron within a discount store, and within two days he was offered employment.
Aaron is enjoying being at work, making his own money and knowing that this will be a pathway to the career he is wanting in the future, while adding important skills to his resume.
April, like all APM Employment Consultants, will continue to offer weekly post-placement support for Aaron.
Especially at this difficult time for thousands of job seekers living with disability, this extra support will not only ensure Aaron continues to love his current role, but thrives in his future role working with Companion Animals.
