The Empower Real Storytellers Festival has made a powerful impact, giving people with disabilities a platform to showcase their talents, share their stories, and engage with the broader community.
The festival, which took place in Western Australia in November 2024, included film screenings, workshops, and community events, was designed to address the challenges faced by people with disabilities in accessing creative platforms, skill-building opportunities, and economic benefits.
Co-created by APM Communities and filmmaker Marty Stevens, it provided a much-needed space for artistic expression and storytelling, helping to break down barriers and promote a more inclusive society.
The festival featured a range of activities, including capacity-building workshops, a vibrant short-film showcase, and panel discussions on accessibility in the arts.
Local and regional creatives participated, with a diverse selection of films highlighting personal experiences, triumphs, and the unique perspectives of people with disabilities.
“This festival wasn’t just about showcasing talent. It was about giving people with disabilities the platform and the voice they deserve. Seeing the creativity, passion and powerful stories told through film was truly inspiring”, said Larra Juab, APM Communities
Accessibility was at the heart of the festival, with features such as Auslan interpreters, captioned and audio-described films, and accessible venue arrangements ensuring that everyone could fully participate.
The initiative also opened up economic opportunities, with participants being compensated for their contributions and local micro-enterprises led by people with disabilities benefiting from the event.
A standout moment was the festival night itself, where the community came together to celebrate the power of storytelling.
The event attracted attendees from across Western Australia, including regional areas, and was also livestreamed, extending its reach to a broader audience.
Feedback from attendees underscored the festival’s success, with many highlighting how it increased their awareness of disability inclusion and the importance of accessible storytelling platforms.
“Being part of this festival gave me the confidence to share my story. It was amazing to see people connect with my film and understand my experience,” said Kasey Burgess, Empower Real Participant.
Key partnerships with organisations such as City of Joondalup, ECU, Jets, WADA, Variety WA, and FilmBites played a crucial role in making the festival a success.
Looking ahead, the festival’s working group with the support of APM Communities are committed to expanding its reach and impact. Plans are already underway for future events, with a focus on strengthening community engagement, securing additional support, and further enhancing accessibility.
The Empower Real Storytellers Festival proves the power of authentic storytelling in helping to strengthen inclusion and shift perceptions.

As part of the NDIS Partners in the Community program, APM Communities help people with disability in several regions in Western Australia, Queensland and the Northern Territory to access support.
Our Local Area Coordinators (LACs) help people with disability, NDIS participants, families and carers to identify and access the support they need.
