Merinda's leap into a promising new career

It was the unpredictability of casual work at a local supermarket that left Merinda searching for more financial security for her and her family.

Merinda, a First Nations single mum, was eager to develop her career prospects and set up a more regular routine for her child, which she had been unable to find working different shifts every week.

When she came to APM Employment Services in Nerang, Merinda connected with Workforce Australia consultant Belinda, who understood the challenges she faced.

Straight away Belinda reassured Merinda there were alternative options and she could make positive changes with the right support.

Belinda suggested further education could set the stage for a bright future.

Though apprehension shadowed Merinda’s initial thoughts of returning to study, with APM’s encouragement, she enrolled in a Certificate III in Business Administration—a choice that soon paid dividends.

Navigating Workforce Australia with Belinda’s assistance, Merinda found her rhythm, balancing her studies and caring responsibilities.

Merinda was also introduced to the Balan Jagun Program, for First Nations peoples to engage in cultural enrichment and community connectivity, set up in collaboration with Real Australian Indigenous Learning (RAIL).

Merinda’s perseverance was soon rewarded as Belinda spotted an Indigenous Administration Traineeship at the Gold Coast University Hospital, perfectly blending practical experience with Merinda’s academic pursuits.

APM’s help included guidance in interview preparation and even sourcing the perfect interview outfit through the Employment Fund.

Merinda began her traineeship and quickly thrived in an environment where support and encouragement are abundant.

Continuing her journey, APM and Belinda remain by her side, a testament to their dedication and her hard-earned achievement.

Reflecting on the tremendous strides she’s made, Merinda shares, “Belinda has made a truly positive impact on me and continues to be a supportive and positive person.”

Merinda's story isn't just her own—it highlights the benefits of embracing diversity and inclusion through partnerships with programs like APM.
